Stoop labor is a fine cellar for aging the lessons life gives. Stories get uncorked and strewn in the fields, broadcast to the spirits. Left wild to ground. I’ve been sowing them my whole life.
I’ve been allowed to spend forty years in reforestation work. My company, Greenwave, Inc., planted tens of millions of trees on over 150,000 acres of open timberland. I personally planted a million of those seedlings by hand. I was able to watch the sun rise each day in denuded fields then put my hands in that dirt to replant them.
I retired in 2018. Well, to be honest, I had my own business and it being seasonal work, I just stopped showing up. Realized there was a creative person buried in the dirt back there that just needed a little water. Now, there’s not enough hours in the day.
My wife and I live in Athens, Ga. and we have five children. I’d like to say I write for them. It’s not the truth, but I’d like to say it. I write because I can’t not.
